Fast Track Qualifiers

Mums Tipple got his career back on track with victory in the Listed Bombardier Lady Wulfruna Stakes (7f) at Wolverhampton today, Saturday, March 13, a Fast-Track Qualifier for the Bombardier All-Weather Mile Championship on Good Friday.

Having tracked front runner Lord Of The Lodge (Karl Burke/Clifford Lee) from the outset, Mums Tipple (Richard Hannon/Ryan Moore) was well positioned to take advantage of the sedate pace as the nine runners turned into the home straight.

Mums Tipple challenged Lord Of The Lodge at the furlong pole and strode clear for a decisive two and a quarter length success. The 3/1 favourite Highland Dress (Archie Watson/Kieran Shoemark) was a length and three quarters further behind in third, with those held up unable to make an impression.

Mums Tipple appeared to have the world at his feet following a stunning 11-length success in the Goffs UK Premier Yearling Stakes at York’s Ebor Festival in 2019 but failed to replicate that form in four starts last year.

The four-year-old son of Footstepsinthesand was gelded in the autumn and showed promise on his comeback when an unlucky sixth in the Listed Betway Kachy Stakes over six furlongs at Lingfield Park on February 6.

Ryan Moore, registering a record fourth win in the Bombardier Lady Wulfruna Stakes, said: “This is a nice win for the owners because Mums Tipple looked a serious horse at two.

“Last year was a mess for many reasons really, but he ran an encouraging race at Lingfield over six and we felt the step up to seven furlongs would suit.

“There were some good horses in here today, but the race worked out well and he has gone away and won really nicely – I am delighted with him.”

Having hit the woodwork with Lord Of The Lodge, Karl Burke and Clifford Lee went one better with Born To Be Alive in the Bombardier British-Hopped Amber Beer Lincoln Trial Handicap (1m 142y).

The seven-year-old, who returned from an 896-day absence earlier this season, travelled strongly behind the speed before lengthening best in the straight to score by a half-length from On A Session (David Barron/Connor Beasley).

Burke said of the 11/2 chance: “We are delighted with that as we fancied Born To Be Alive strongly. He is in great form and has really stepped up since he came back from injury.

“I thought Cliff gave him a cracking ride. He managed to get himself into a great position from stall 10 and I don’t think the horse overdoes himself when he gets to the front.

“He will go for the Lincoln now [Doncaster, March 27]. That has been the plan for a good while.”

The other class two event on the card, the Betway Handicap over six furlongs, was won by 11/4 favourite Streamline (Clive Cox/Ryan Moore), with Stewards’ Cup victor Summerghand (David O’Meara/Adam Kirby) a staying-on second.

This was a first success for Streamline since he landed the G3 Sirenia Stakes at Kempton Park in September 2019.
