Megallan Heads Eight In Ladbrokes Spring Cup

Fast Track Qualifiers
|

05 March 2021

A quality edition of the Listed Get Your Ladbrokes Daily Odds Boost Spring Cup (2.00pm, eight runners) takes centre stage at Lingfield Park on Saturday, March 6.

The seven-furlong contest is a Fast-Track Qualifier for the Ladbrokes All-Weather Three-Year-Old Championship over six furlongs at Lingfield Park on Finals Day, Good Friday, April 2.

Fresh from victory in last weekend’s G3 Betway Winter Derby, John Gosden and Robert Havlin team up again with Megallan. The Kingman colt, a promising winner on debut at Newmarket, finished seventh on his latest outing in the G1 Vertem Futurity Trophy at Doncaster.

After a 22/1 success first time out at Newmarket, Apollo One (Peter Charalambous/Martin Harley) finished third in the G3 Solario Stakes at Sandown Park and ended the campaign with victory in a six-furlong conditions race at Salisbury.

Thank You Next (Richard Hannon/Ryan Moore) is another contender with form in Pattern races. The daughter of No Nay Never shed her maiden tag on the All-Weather at Kempton Park in July and was runner-up in Newmarket’s G3 Oh So Sharp Stakes in the autumn.

Richard Hannon said today: “Thank You Next could head for something like the G3 Prix Imprudence next month [Deauville, April 8] and this should bring her along.

“She really has done well over the winter – I think she will need this a bit, but she has done a couple of good pieces of work.

“She showed at Kempton last year that she likes the All-Weather. Hopefully, she will run well.”

William Haggas is the most successful trainer in the Spring Cup, with four winners since 2014. The Newmarket handler saddles Yazaman (Cieren Fallon), who has been placed in Fast-Track Qualifiers at Newcastle and Wolverhampton this season.

To The Bar (Richard Hughes/Shane Kelly) has posted two wide-margin successes on the All-Weather, most recently taking a novice auction event by seven and a half lengths at Wolverhampton in December.

El Drama (Roger Varian/David Egan), a 425,000 guineas yearling, justified strong market support to make a winning debut at Doncaster in October.

The other unknown quantities are Big Narstie (Richard Spencer/Hayley Turner) and Gioia Cieca (Keith Dalgleish/Joe Fanning), who progressed from their debuts to win next time out at Lingfield Park and Kempton Park respectively.
