23 October 2018

Season 6 of the All-Weather Championships gets underway at Newcastle on 23 October. Culminating in the £1,000,000 Finals Day at Lingfield Park on Good Friday, the Championships will once again be honouring the stars of the winter. Weighing room stalwarts Adam Kirby and Luke Morris have both been crowned Champion Jockey, based on number of wins, on a number of occasions in previous years, with Morris taking the crown in Season 5. His total of 73 winners, saw him 13 clear of runner up Oisin Murphy in 2018, when he received his prize at Newcastle Racecourse on Good Friday. New for Season 6 of the All-Weather Championships, there will be a separate prize for Apprentice Jockeys, similarly based on number of wins. Jockeys holding an apprentice licence on 23 October will be eligible for the competition, with a total of £5,000 in prize money split between the winner and the runner up. Dale Gibson, Executive Director at the PJA, welcomed the news, “The All-Weather Championships has been a real success for British racing in the last five years and has always rewarded the All-Weather Champion Jockey, this year the runner up will also see a financial reward for their endeavour. We’re also delighted to see the introduction of the prize for both the leading Apprentice Jockey and runner up this year, too, as a reward for all the hard work that they put in over the extensive winter period. The PJA thank ARC and Great British Racing for their support. The prize for All-Weather Champion Apprentice will be split £4,000 to the winning jockey, with £1,000 to the runner up. Similarly, for the first time, the prize for All-Weather Champion Jockey, will be split with £8,000 going to the winner and £2,000 to the runner up. The All-Weather Championships consists of all races run on an all-weather surface in Britain between 23 October and Good Friday (19 April) 2019.
