|

25 November 2016

Volunteer Point (Mick Channon/Graham Gibbons) returned to form with a cosy victory in the £19,000 32Red.com Fillies' Conditions Stakes on Tapeta at Wolverhampton this evening (Friday, November 25). The seven-furlong contest is a Fast-Track Qualifier for the £150,000 32Red All-Weather Fillies' And Mares' Championships Conditions Stakes, which Volunteer Point won last year, over the same distance on Polytrack at Lingfield Park on Good Friday, April 14. Volunteer Point, who broke the course record for seven furlongs at Chelmsford City in January, had five victories on Polytrack before gaining her first success on Tapeta tonight. The four-year-old filly, held up in second last, came with a strong run on the outside to lead inside the final furlong, The 15/8 favourite won by a length in good style from Dutch Destiny (William Haggas/Shane Kelly, 5/1) with Golden Amber (Dean Ivory/P J McDonald, 11/2) a short-head back in third. Gibbons, successful on Volunteer Point for the fifth time, commented: "She was the best filly in the race. "She has just needed a couple of runs to warm herself back into it and will get better as the winter goes on. "Volunteer Point looks amazing - she has still got her summer coat and throughout last All-Weather season she never had a winter coat. "I just took my time on her today and let Dutch Destiny take me into the race - I always had her covered up the straight." Gibbons enjoyed a 30.6/1 double at Wolverhampton, having also partnered the opening winner on the card, 10/1 chance Coquine in the first division of the Betway Sprint Distance Handicap for trainer David O'Meara.
