Battalion (Jamie Osborne/William Carson, 7/2) made the perfect start for new connections when the impressive winner of the £19,000 Betway Conditions Stakes (1.40pm) over 10 furlongs on Polytrack at Lingfield Park today, Wednesday, November 30. The six-year-old, who changed hands for 70,000 guineas at Tattersalls last month and now races in the colours of Melbourne 10 Racing, was winning the race for the second year in succession and recording the third victory of his career on the All-Weather. Previously trained by William Haggas, the son of Authorized is a dual Listed winner including in the 2014 Churchill Stakes, also staged over 10 furlongs on Polytrack at Lingfield Park. Battalion was slowly away from the stalls in today's race and settled at the rear of the field. He quickened impressively up the inside as the field entered the straight and took the lead a furlong from home. The gelding lengthened well inside the final furlong to score by four lengths from Master The World (David Elsworth/Shane Kelly, 5/4 favourite) with Somethingthrilling (David Elsworth/Tom Marquand 12/1) a further neck back in third. The winning time was 2m 2.74s. Lambourn-based trainer Jamie Osborne said: "Battalion did it nicely today. It was a bit of a fact-finding mission and I probably wouldn't get too carried away because he did get the run of the race and maybe the favourite underperformed. "We have got some decisions to make now because he has been accepted to go to Dubai and we wanted to see what happened today before making a decision. "It is possible he could go to Meydan and, if he did, it is not impossible that he could come back for the Winter Derby and Finals Day. We have got to decide whether we want to put him through that. "The prize money in Dubai is very tempting, but then again we have super prize money here during the winter season and it looks like he will be one of the better mile and a quarter horses. "We will let the dust settle and then make a decision. It is a bit of a headscratcher but it is a high-class head scratch!" Every All-Weather race run in Britain between October 27, 2016, and Good Friday, April 14, 2017, is part of the All-Weather Championships.
